Stable systems, whether in nature or society, require diversity and variation to remain resilient and adaptable to disruptions. Just like non-equilibrium steady state systems need low entropy energy to dissipate and maintain stability, societies need a form of 'free energy' that allows for flexibility in the face of unexpected challenges. Oftentimes, it is the presence of countercultures and diverse viewpoints that provide the necessary energy to ensure the longevity and stability of a system.
