Interpreting Assessments Formatively and Summatively
Assessments can provide two types of conclusions - summative, where the overall understanding is assessed, and formative, where insights for future actions are gathered. The same assessment can serve both purposes. For instance, a test can indicate a student knows 50 percent of their math facts (summative) while also highlighting specific areas like difficulty with a specific times table (formative). The distinction lies in how the assessment data is used - to improve instruction (formative) or to label or conclude someone's performance (summative). Understanding these terms is crucial to effectively leveraging assessment data.
