The SAT score is not an effective testing method to identify the cream of the crop for people in STEM as there are too many kids scoring 800 on the SAT, especially among Asians. The SAT test can be made arbitrarily difficult and the scale can be arbitrarily high, allowing the identification of a higher level within the 10% of the 800 level. However, the SAT is pressured to equalize itself by demographic group, which limits the potential dispersion of results and prevents the identification of exceptional talent. Despite the potential, the focus of the company conducting the SAT is to reduce group distinctiveness rather than unearth talent. Overall, there is an opportunity for universities or employers to develop their own tests to unearth diverse talent.
