Breathwork and Flow: How Breathing Prepares the Brain and Body for Peak Performance

NOTE

Lung alveoli collapse all the time, need regular sigh every 5 min

Sighing is a crucial biological function that occurs approximately every five minutes in humans, serving to prevent lung alveoli from collapsing. The structure of mammalian lungs comprises around 400 to 500 million tiny alveoli, which provide an extensive surface area for gas exchange despite a limited volume. These alveoli can collapse due to their small size and the properties of the surfactant lining that causes their wet surfaces to stick together. Regular sighing, unlike ordinary breaths, generates sufficient force to reopen these collapsed alveoli, maintaining optimal lung function. This involuntary process ensures that the respiratory system operates efficiently, emphasizing the significance of sighing beyond emotional expression.
