The belated rise of countries like India, China, and Russia after the major world powers have taken their spoils is a volatile and insecure situation. Similar to the experiences of Japan and Germany, late commerce to modernity can radicalize nationalism, leading to aggression domestically and internationally. The lesson from Japan and Germany shows that democracy struggles to grow and develop in such circumstances. India, despite being formally a democracy, is currently experiencing the resurgence of nationalism.
