Value of Benchmark Creation in AI Research
The creation of benchmarks in AI research, such as ImageNet, is critical for advancing the field and putting it on a structured path. However, there seems to be a tendency to treat benchmark creation as a secondary task rather than a core focus. The AI community focused on existential safety shows a stronger interest in benchmark creation compared to academic researchers. This disparity is perplexing as one would expect all scientists to prioritize creating high-quality datasets for accurate model evaluation. The existence of low-quality datasets leads to flawed conclusions and limitations in research findings. Adding constraints in the form of quality benchmarks can potentially enhance creativity and advance AI research effectively.
