PE Greatest Hits: Thompson and Klosterman Debate Why Society Got So Negative

Plain English with Derek Thompson

NOTE

The Changing Relationship Between Opinion and Publicity

Our experience of the world is increasingly mediated by this bizarre understanding of let's call it the discourse, which when we're commenting on something like the new Netflix movie or the president, we are more aware of what everyone is saying than we used to be. This might change our relationship to our own opinions because we constantly feel like we have to react against this sort of ethereal discourse./nSomething very fundamentally strange happened when we democratized the means of publishing, when we allowed everyone to become a publisher and we said, you're all your own publicists. They seem to have figured out, a person to person, that the fastest route to publicity in the internet age is not just by praising things, but by finding the right way to be critical, finding the right niche in which to be an antifan and sort of negative appraiser of what's happening.
