Belonging is often taken for granted, but its importance becomes clear when it's absent. Traveling or being in unfamiliar situations can make us realize what it feels like not to belong. This feeling is an ongoing reality for many historically underrepresented or stereotyped groups. It causes unease, anxiety, and social pain. Research shows that social ostracism activates the same brain regions associated with physical pain. We are wired to feel a threat to our reputation as well as our biology.
