Scripture contains different moods of language, including imperative language which sets conditions and demands fulfillment, like the Ten Commandments, and promissory language that creates a new reality without conditions. For example, the covenant in Genesis 12 with Abraham is purely promissory. Jesus in John's gospel uses declaratory, promissory language, such as 'I am the bread of life', emphasizing gift over demand.
