The Impact of Weight Loss on Inflammation and Biomarkers
A study comparing exercise alone, nutrition alone, and nutrition plus exercise for weight loss in post-menopausal women found that weight loss resulted in decreased inflammatory potential of the diet in all groups. The groups that showed a statistically significant drop compared to the controls were the diet only group and the diet plus exercise group. However, after adjustment for weight change, the changes in the diet inflammatory index were no longer associated with changes in inflammatory biomarkers, indicating that weight change had a more significant effect on biomarker changes than the dietary inflammatory index. This suggests that weight loss, which reduces inflammation, has a more pronounced impact on inflammatory biomarkers than the dietary inflammation index itself.
