Huberman Lab

NOTE

Treatment options for tension headaches

Tension headaches are commonly caused by various factors such as sleep deprivation, caffeine intake, stress, infections, and muscle tension. To treat tension headaches, one can target neural mechanisms by addressing motor neurons with muscle relaxants, sensory neurons by altering sensory input, or modulatory neurons by adjusting perception of pain. Each approach has its advantages and disadvantages. While some may prefer painkillers, they can have sedative or addictive qualities. Behavioral approaches that modulate the communication between sensory and motor neurons also exist as alternative treatments for tension headaches.
