Human brain's hardwired basis enables people to easily understand in-group and out-group dynamics, and fear can be induced towards the out-group. This is exploited in politics through instilling fear of the other group to gain support. This primal belief further highlights the need to protect oneself from being disadvantaged. Furthermore, equality, perceived as a unifying American value, is actually divisive as it requires dismantling of hierarchy, which faces resistance.
