NOTE

Nutritional Insights for Better Sleep

Eating the right foods before bed can promote relaxation and improve sleep quality, despite limited data on the subject. Tryptophan-rich foods, such as turkey, milk, yogurt, and cheese, can help increase melatonin production, aiding in sleep timing. Incorporating complex carbohydrates, like whole grain crackers, oatmeal, and sweet potatoes, a few hours before bed can enhance tryptophan's sleep-promoting effects. Magnesium-rich foods, such as nuts, seeds, and leafy greens, are beneficial for sleep, particularly for those who may be magnesium deficient. Foods containing melatonin, like tart cherries and kiwi fruits, have shown promise in improving sleep quality. Herbal teas, particularly valerian root tea, may have sedative properties, whereas chamomile tea may help reduce anxiety, indirectly benefiting sleep. Conversely, it's best to avoid caffeine, heavy or spicy foods close to bedtime, as they can disrupt sleep. While eating may not significantly impact sleep within an hour before bed, it is advisable to avoid meals three hours prior to sleep for optimal rest. Undetected gastric reflux from spicy meals can also lead to unrefreshing sleep.
