In modern affluent societies, a crisis of meaning is evident through loneliness, erosion of social trust, political partisanship, and soaring levels of drug addiction. The abundance of material possessions and distractions does not guarantee a good life. Understanding our own minds and taking responsibility for them could help alleviate this crisis by addressing the chaos and destructive states of mind such as greed, fear, hatred, and ignorance. While it may be challenging to change societal and institutional factors, each individual has the capacity to radically change their own lives and those around them by understanding and controlling their minds. The curse of partial attention leads to a lack of focus on loved ones and deeper priorities, resulting in dissatisfaction and insatiable desires, despite achieving material success.
