Overcrowded prisons

In brazil, prisons are currently operating around about a hundred and forty four % capacity. In bolivia, that number is around 265%. These are huge amounts of people being locked up. Often these people haven't yet gone to trial. And because of these conditions, because of their sheer numbers, it's often not possible for guards to be present. So the result that we're seeing is that prisons are increasingly run by gangs - which has really terrible consequences.
