The Spitfire aircraft was named after Lady Houston, a suffragette political activist and one of the richest women in the UK./nLady Houston helped pay for the design of the Spitfire by funding the biennial international air speed race called the Snyder Trophy./nThe government initially refused to fund the race, but Lady Houston believed it was a mistake and disagreed with their decision.
