In just 20 years after the discovery of the Americas, 250 thousand Africans were kidnapped and transported to the New World. Over 12 million were traded as slaves, with nearly 2 million dying during the voyage. The Empire of Songhai saw a period of bloodshed end with the reign of Askia Daud, who stabilized the nation by placing his sons in key positions. Despite inheriting a weakened country, he undertook campaigns to suppress rebel factions.
