Addiction is defined as the continued compulsive use of a substance or behavior despite harm to self and/or others. There are 11 criteria, including tolerance, withdrawal, loss of control, compulsion, and disregard for consequences, used to diagnose addiction based on behavioral patterns rather than physical tests. Despite the lack of biological tests, addiction is heavily influenced by biology and can involve denial and rationalization by individuals.
