Exiles in Internal Family Systems Therapy are extreme parts of oneself that have been deemed too vulnerable or terrifying to handle. Common examples include vulnerable exiles that internalize worthlessness due to past hurt and carry a sense of shame, as well as parts overwhelmed by terror that are locked away. These exiles are often younger parts that believe negative messages from past trauma, leading to them being frozen in fear or grief. In our culture, exiles are suppressed to move on from trauma, not realizing these parts hold valuable qualities like creativity and playfulness.
