What to Look for in a Patient With Acetaminophen Overdose

Patients who have taken an acetaminophen overdose and are at risk for liver damage will have an increase in their transaminases by the 24-hour mark. Initial liver enzyme tests can establish a baseline to determine if the patient is fine or at risk. However, bilirubin can interfere with acetaminophen concentration, so elevated levels may be due to an infectious hepatitis rather than acetaminophen overdose.
