Escaping Ambiguity through Denial and Identification
Some people with diverse interests and capabilities may retreat from the world and deny their potential in order to escape the tension of ambiguity. This denial of self-awareness leads to becoming a 'subman' who is easily influenced and persuaded, often likened to a 'sheep.' Another common tactic to avoid ambiguity is becoming a 'serious man' who denies their transcendence and identifies wholly with a cause, such as declaring lifelong political allegiance.
