Berkshire could be run without equity to impress people, but that's not our objective. Other companies intentionally decrease their net worth to achieve good returns on equity. The S&P figures show a significant difference between reported earnings before and after special charges. American businesses often write off expenses to boost future earnings. While some of this is smart financial management, it can also become manipulative.
