Social Media: Technology Overwhelms Human Weaknesses

Social media technology has effectively undermined and overwhelmed human weaknesses. It taps into and exploits our short-term memory system, leading to distraction. It also overwhelms our dopamine and reward systems, causing addiction. Additionally, technology exploits our reliance on stopping cues, leading to addictive use. It further exploits our need for social approval, resulting in issues like teen depression. Moreover, technology hacks our heuristics for determining truth, making it difficult to discern real from fake. These problems are interconnected and collectively contribute to a digital fallout or climate change of culture. This slow erosion of the social fabric is known as human downgrading, and it requires a global response to address the destructive impact on society.
