Rising Expectations in Wealth and Happiness
Over the last 80 years, people have become much wealthier with higher incomes, net worth, and life expectancy. However, despite these statistical improvements, individuals feel worse off because their expectations have risen even faster. When expectations outpace income growth, happiness with money is elusive. Throughout history, despite overall improvement in prosperity, people do not necessarily become happier due to constantly escalating expectations. Progress brings about advanced necessities like medication and healthcare, but individuals tend to take these advancements for granted. The idea that man has an infinite capacity to take things for granted rings true, as the rise in expectations often diminishes the happiness derived from progress.
