Understanding Terminology in LP(a)
The terms 'small' and 'large' in relation to LP(a) do not refer to the size of the apoA peptide, but to the diameter of the LDL moiety of the lipoprotein. The LDL moiety within Lp(a) can vary in size, resulting in small, intermediate, and large LDL particles. The risk associated with LP(a) is linked to a kringle IV type 2 polymorphism, not the size or molecular weight of the apoA peptide.
