Strict parenting, despite popular belief, does not produce better-behaved kids. Research shows that strict or authoritarian parenting actually leads to lower self-esteem and worse behavior in children. Harsh limits imposed by strict parenting deprive kids of the opportunity to develop self-discipline and responsibility. Children need loving and empathic limits to internalize self-control. By rejecting limits that aren't empathic, kids see control outside themselves and resist taking responsibility for their actions.
