i decided that this was a topic i should attend to. Back in the 19 eighties, i conceived of a book which was very different than the one i ended up writing forty years on. But at its core, it started with the encounter with some of these dreadful things,. treating mental patients by evicerating them, taking out their teeth and their tonsils and then their machs and colons. And in the case of women, services, because women disproportionately were treated in this fashion.
