The public school education system, aimed at providing equal educational opportunities for all children, particularly those from underprivileged backgrounds, faces significant shortcomings in practice. Although the intent behind mandatory government-funded education appears noble and humanitarian, the execution is flawed. A critical factor is the need for scalability; classrooms often have high student-to-teacher ratios, which leads to inadequate individual attention for students, as they do not learn at the same pace. This one-size-fits-all approach neglects the diverse learning needs of children, resulting in many not receiving the support they require. Additionally, the system was primarily designed to serve as a bridge to the industrial workforce, focusing on producing functioning members of society rather than fostering creativity and curiosity. Consequently, qualities essential for innovation and personal development are overlooked, diminishing the overall effectiveness of the educational experience.

I sat down with Hannah Frankman, founder of Renegade Educator and an advocate for alternative education models, to explore her insights on the flaws in traditional public schooling and the innovative approaches that could shape the future of learning. Hannah shares her personal experience growing up as a homeschool kid, which she believes is a more natural and effective approach that reflects how humans have learned for almost all of history. We delve into various educational models, from Montessori and Waldorf to micro-schools and homeschooling, and how each can foster critical thinking, creativity, and self-directed learning in children. Hannah also highlights the role of technology in education and the potential of micro-schools to revolutionize how we think about learning environments.
