Dragon Ball Z marked the first significant presence of manga in Western culture, challenging the perception that it was limited to a niche audience. The creator, Toriyami Akiori, initially did not anticipate any success with his work, especially with Dr. Slump and Dragon Ball. However, the unexpected success of Dragon Ball Z surprised him. Despite his enjoyment in drawing, he found the manga creation process to be incredibly demanding and challenging, sometimes leading to only 20 minutes of sleep over four nights. Akiori even had to involve his family's help in inking due to tight deadlines.
