NOTE

We Mistake Connectivity for Community

We often confuse connectivity with community, believing that being digitally connected equates to being part of a supportive network. However, despite the proliferation of digital communication tools, loneliness has reached alarming levels, highlighting a paradox where increased connectivity does not foster genuine relationships. Studies indicate that social media use correlates directly with feelings of isolation, suggesting that superficial interactions replace meaningful conversations. Engaging in real-life conversations enables empathy and understanding, which are critical components of true community. Researchers have established limits to the number of people we can maintain meaningful relationships with, citing a maximum of 150, yet technology encourages us to connect superficially with many more. Furthermore, the immediate spark we feel when connecting with someone who shares our interests—referred to as chemistry—should not be mistaken for the deeper bonds that form through sustained interaction and understanding. Authentic friendships develop from shared experiences and the mutual appreciation of individual qualities rather than mere surface-level connections.
