Faith Matters

NOTE

Making Space for New Realities and Assimilating Death

The body needs to make space for new spiritual realities like love or loss by letting out some water to assimilate something new. Crying is a way of making space to assimilate a new reality, whether joyful or sorrowful. It is crucial not to deny death and to acknowledge it as part of life, despite living in a death-denying culture. Assimilating the reality of death into life is a way of affirming life and love. In a caregiving role, the focus should not be on fixing the other person's pain but on bearing witness and sitting with the discomfort of their suffering.
