How to get rid of hiccups

Hiccups can be painful and intrusive, but there is a simple technique to get rid of them. Hiccups are caused by a spasm of the phrenic nerve, which controls the diaphragm. The sensory branch of the phrenic nerve relays the sensation of contraction in the diaphragm back to the brain, causing pain. To stop hiccups, you need to stop the phrenic nerve from spasming. Breathing into a bag or drinking water from the opposite side of the glass are indirect and often ineffective methods. However, a reliable technique involves inhaling three times in a row and holding your breath for about 15 to 20 seconds. This hyper-contracts the phrenic nerve and subsequently alleviates the spasming, effectively eliminating hiccups.
