Gradient Dissent: Conversations on AI

NOTE

The octopus thought experiment to fail the Turing Test

The thought experiment involves two stranded humans communicating through a telegraph cable. A hyper-intelligent octopus taps into the cable and pretends to be one of the humans. The question is whether the octopus can continue to fool the other human. While the octopus can initially maintain coherence in small talk, it becomes increasingly difficult for the octopus to maintain good communication as the conversation becomes more meaningful. The octopus lacks knowledge and experience of certain concepts and cannot understand the context of the conversation. Eventually, when the human asks for help against a bear attack, the octopus is utterly useless. This scenario demonstrates the failure of the octopus in passing the Turing Test.
