The desire for inclusion in exclusive groups, termed the 'inner ring' by C.S. Lewis, is a pervasive theme throughout life, influencing choices and aspirations at every stage. This longing starts in childhood with the wish to join the 'cool kids' table and continues into adulthood, manifesting as a drive to join prestigious organizations or roles, such as elite military units or influential professional circles. The compulsive quest to be part of the inner circle leads individuals to yearn for access to high-level discussions and decision-making environments, creating a continuous cycle of seeking deeper layers of exclusivity. However, this pursuit is likened to peeling an onion, suggesting that each achievement only brings one closer to ultimate emptiness, as the desire is insatiable and the inner ring always moves farther away, ultimately leaving one chasing after an illusion.
