Changing Self-Talk: Speaking to Yourself as a Friend

The speaker shares an exercise they did to change their self-talk. Instead of criticizing themselves, they imagined speaking kindly to a friend who made a mistake. They recorded these conversations and shared them with their therapist. After about four months, they were able to silence their inner critic, represented by the nickname Bobby Knight. Despite still making mistakes, they now communicate with themselves more lovingly and have reduced their tendency to beat themselves up.
