The DNC's Struggle to Get the Nomination for Vice President

George Meany, the CEO and chairman of the AFL CIO, led the Democratic establishment's efforts to undermine McGovern's nomination at the convention. After scrambling to find a vice presidential candidate, they settled on Terry Eagleton, who had opposed McGovern in the primaries. However, as soon as the campaign started, it was revealed that Eagleton had a history of mental illness and shock treatment. Despite initially standing behind him, the McGovern campaign eventually asked Eagleton to step down. The DNC then selected Sergeant Trevor as a replacement.
