Competing to see who has had the hardest time can worsen situations, leading to a one-upmanship culture, where individuals share painful experiences to keep the group engaged. Encouraging kids to discuss traumatic memories before important tasks could have detrimental effects. Mental health surveys flooded with extreme questions like suicide methods can be harmful, justified under the guise of saving lives and representation. Justifying exposing kids to dark themes in literature by claiming it helps them see themselves reflected can be damaging and unsafe for most children's developing minds. Criticizing objection to such content by making parents feel unintelligent or crazy overlooks the negative impact of valorizing suicide or presenting it as a coping mechanism, which research shows can increase suicide rates.
