American Foreign Policy and the Era of Realignment

American foreign policy is currently up for debate and negotiation, contrary to the belief that there was a golden era of consensus in the past. In the 1940s and 1950s, foreign policy was fiercely debated, with Joe McCarthy even denouncing the State Department. Violence erupted in the streets over support for or opposition to the Vietnam War. Wishing for a return to a supposed golden past is not helpful or historically accurate. However, having a clear vision is necessary.
