The three critical types of note taking systems for knowledge workers are: 1. Working Memory Extender for temporarily holding and organizing more information than your brain can handle, 2. Obligation Tracker for maintaining all relevant information for every obligation on your plate, and 3. Key Idea Capturing for capturing interesting ideas, articles, brainstorms, and personal reflections. Each of these requires a different system with varying rates of refresh and reset. For example, the working memory is reset every 10 minutes, the obligation list is used daily, and the idea capture is revisited in detail much less often.
