The importance of motivational interviewing in therapy
Motivational interviewing was created in therapy to address reactance and other issues. Clients seeking help for alcohol or drug abuse often left therapy more engaged in their harmful behavior. Research identified that professionals telling clients what they should do, or inducing shame or guilt, led to negative reactions and a perceived loss of autonomy.
