The word 'energy' was coined in the early 19th century after the writing of Wealth of Nations, derived from Greek roots. Adam Smith, who didn't use the term, couldn't be faulted for not knowing about the conservation of energy. Smith's idea that labor is the source of all value and the division of labor leads to wealth was later used by Smith and Ricardo to critique feudalism in favor of capitalism.
