The 10,000 Steps Myth and Exercise for Weight Loss

The idea of achieving 10,000 steps a day originated arbitrarily but corresponds well with the activity levels of hunter-gatherers. However, large epidemiological studies indicate that the health benefits plateau around 7,000 to 8,000 steps. When it comes to weight loss, 150 minutes of moderate physical activity per week, such as walking, is not significantly effective due to the low calorie burn. On the other hand, rigorous controlled studies suggest that higher doses of physical activity, 300 minutes a week or more, can aid in weight loss, although not rapidly or significantly. Exercise alone cannot lead to significant weight loss fast, given the high calorie content of common foods compared to the calories burned during exercise. Physical activity is crucial for preventing weight gain or regaining weight after a diet, as supported by numerous studies.
