Understanding ALT and AST ratios in liver disease
The ratio of AST to ALT can indicate alcoholic hepatitis, but if the AST plus ALT is less than 500, it's likely alcohol-related liver disease. However, if it's over 1000, the ratio doesn't matter. In Ms. Dilly's case, drug-induced liver injury is suspected due to her recent medication. Certain drugs can cause an autoimmune hepatitis-like reaction. When ordering the ANA, anti-smooth muscle antibody, a positive result would show a typical pattern.
