The Brain's Critical Role in Modulating the Immune System's Response to Stress

Chronic inflammation is linked to chronic disease, with stress hormones being released during chronic stressors that have immunosuppressive and anti-inflammatory qualities. Although acute stressors have been shown to boost immune function, chronic stressors suppress the immune system, leading to an imbalance of inflammation and anti-inflammation. The brain plays a critical role in appraising social stressors and modulating the immune system's response to stressors involving social or physical threat. Specific neural regions such as the DACC and the anterior insula process social threat-related information and activate stress and inflammatory responses. This highlights the potential reasons for the brain's sensitivity to social rejection or related cues.
