Exploring the Benefits of Early Palliative Care in End-of-Life Medicine

A study on stage four lung cancer patients revealed that those who received early palliative care alongside usual oncology care had significant benefits. They were less likely to be on chemotherapy in their last months of life, started hospice sooner, had lower costs, spent less time in the hospital, and were less likely to die in the hospital or ICU. Surprisingly, they not only had reduced suffering but also lived 25% longer. Early palliative care, starting from the beginning of the illness, led to better outcomes and improved quality of life for patients.
