The French police secretly accessed the EncroChat server in France and made a copy of it. They studied how the server sends updates to EncroChat phones and came up with a plan to inject their own update. They wrote malware and successfully planted it on thousands of EncroChat devices. The malware silently captured and sent copies of messages, potentially including GPS locations.
