The Brain: A Machine That Can't Be Replaced (As Yet)

Building hardware as efficient as the brain in terms of energy and compute is a challenge. The brain is decentralized at the level of neurons, with each neuron having its own memory and compute. Traditional CPUs have separate memory and compute, with communication happening through buses. There are efforts to build more decentralized chips, but they have not reached the level of efficiency of a GPU. GPUs have multiple CPUs with shared memory, but the energy usage is still inefficient compared to the brain. While GPUs are more parallel than traditional CPUs, they are still less parallel than the brain.
