The role of belonging and accuracy goals in human behavior

As social primates, our main goal is to belong. We prioritize belonging over accuracy, but we try to combine them when we can. In scientific institutions, scientists focus on accuracy but also signal to their peers that they are good seekers of accuracy, allowing them to be part of the scientific community without being ostracized. Conspiracy theorists are usually motivated by a fear of authority, a sense of powerlessness, and a distrust of institutions, which can be influenced by both nature and nurture factors.
