When making plans, it's important to base them on our current values and what's important to us. However, it's also crucial to acknowledge that change can impact us and our values over time, so plans should be revisited and adjusted accordingly. It's essential to be compassionate with the idea that our values and preferences may change. While we can't fully anticipate all changes, we can try to make plans based on our core values and what's important to us now. Additionally, it's important to consider predictable ways in which we might change and whether there are stable aspects of our personality that we can rely on. Personality psychologists suggest that while some aspects of our personality may change over a 10 year period, there are also stable traits that remain the same.
Hal Hershfield is a psychologist who studies the emotional connection we have to our “future selves." He talks with Maya about tactics we can use to strengthen this connection, and why it matters.
