Mind the Gap: Making Education Work Across the Globe

NOTE

Tailoring Educational Practices for Students with Special Educational Needs

Educational practices need to be tailored for students with special educational needs by adapting the same principles and philosophies as for other students. Research on concepts like retrieval, wait times, and cold calling often does not consider the needs of students with special educational needs. These students might require extended wait times to process language, locate knowledge, and construct verbal responses, ensuring that giving them more time can be beneficial across various areas. Although there may be pressure to cover a lot of content in the curriculum, rushing through without allowing for successful retrieval may widen the learning gap, disadvantaging students who require more time. It is crucial to create fair and inclusive learning environments for all students, allowing everyone the opportunity to learn and contribute, not just the loudest and quickest students.
